Those who build today think long-term. It's about energy efficiency, high-quality materials, and, of course, comfort for all residents – including those on four paws. A petWALK pet door is far more than a classic cat flap; it's a technically sophisticated building component at passive house level.
For seamless integration into the new home, planning during the construction phase is crucial. In this article, you will learn what matters and which installation method best suits your project.
The first decision: Where should the path outside lead?
Before configuring, the ideal location should be found. Consider the following questions:
- Where do the animals usually stay? The path outside should be accessible naturally and without obstacles.
- Where is the power supply secured? The petWALK requires a power connection. Plan for an outlet within reach so the cable can be routed neatly.
- In which direction does the installation medium open (e.g., when installed in a door or window)? Important for planning: The petWALK hinges should ideally be on the same side as those of the installation medium (e.g., the patio door) to keep cable runs short and handling simple.
Your checklist for planning
Go through these points step by step before diving into detailed planning:
- Have you chosen the right model size? The choice of the correct model depends on the size of your animals:
- Model Medium: Ideal for cats and small to medium-sized dogs with a shoulder height of up to approx. 45 cm.
- Model Large: Ideal for medium to large dogs with a shoulder height of up to approx. 75 cm.
- Have you measured the belly height? The installation height depends on the belly height of your animals. If several animals of different sizes use the petWALK, the largest animal determines the model size, and the smallest animal's belly height determines the positioning.
- Have you determined the building body thickness? Whether it's a wall, glass, or door – record the exact thickness. Our configurator will then automatically select the appropriate accessories such as tunnel sets or spacers.
- Have you clarified professional support? petWALK pet doors are specially designed for self-assembly. Nevertheless, for new constructions, it is advisable to consult your local specialists (glazier for glass installation, bricklayer for wall installation, carpenter for door installation, etc.).
Which installation method is right for you?
Each installation situation has its specific advantages. Here you will find guidance:
Wall installation
- Procedure: A wall opening is created according to the opening dimensions. A tunnel establishes an airtight connection between the outer and inner frames.
- Advantage: A structurally very stable and durable integration.
- Tip: Have it carried out by a professional.
Glass installation
- Procedure: You cannot cut directly into existing insulating glass. A glazier manufactures a new insulating glass panel (double or triple-glazed) with a suitable cutout. The petWALK is then clamped and screwed into this opening.
- Advantage: Ideal for patio doors or floor-to-ceiling fixed glazing. The installation is very clean and also reversible, as the old pane can be reinstalled.
- Important: Combine the installation with a door contact if the petWALK is integrated into a patio door. This way, the system recognizes when the door is open and disables the function.
Door installation
- Procedure: Integration directly into the door leaf of the main entrance door or a side entrance door. A suitable opening is made in the door leaf, into which the petWALK is firmly screwed.
- Advantage: Quick installation and also easily reversible by later replacing the door panel.
- Special feature: Pay attention to the cable routing in the door leaf towards the hinge side. An optional magnetic door contact sensor also prevents collisions if the main door is opened.
