Maintenance made easy - How to carry out the annual inspection of your petWALK door

As an animal lover, you want to make sure that your petWALK door is always working optimally and offers your furry companions the best access to the outside. As with any technical device, the petWALK door also requires regular care to stay in top shape. Here you can find out how to properly maintain your door and which steps are important.

The best time for maintenance

While you are preparing your home for winter, don't forget to winterize the petWALK door. Although the door is generally easy to maintain, it is worth carrying out a thorough maintenance once a year to ensure that it functions optimally and lasts a long time.

Step by step to optimal maintenance

1. Lubricate door hinges properly

Nothing is more annoying than squeaky door hinges. By regularly lubricating with the silicone grease included in the petWALK maintenance kit, you can prevent squeaking and the build-up of dirt. A few minutes of attention will save you a lot of trouble later.

Take the silicone grease that is included in the petWALK maintenance kit and use it to grease your guide plate and the door hinges.

2. Remove dust and dirt

Your petWALK door deserves to be as clean as the rest of your home. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove coarse dirt and then clean the door thoroughly with a slightly damp cloth. This will keep it not only visually appealing but also functional.

3. Optical inspection
Often little things are simply overlooked over time. We therefore recommend taking the time once a year to take a closer look at the petWALK pet door. These questions can help you to make sure you don't overlook anything:

  • Is the door leaf correctly positioned?
  • Does the decor fit correctly?
  • Is the silicone sealant on the outside still sticking well?
  • Are the seals on the door leaf still intact or do they need to be replaced?

Take the time to inspect the door more closely. Check whether the door leaf and the decor are properly fitted, whether the silicone joints are still intact and whether the seals are still sealing well. Small adjustments can help prevent bigger problems.

4. Checking the slip clutch using a hand test

To carry out the hand test, hold your hand in the open door and then close the door using the remote control so that a blocking object is simulated. The door should touch the blocking object and then open again slightly so that the object can be removed. If the door is worn out, but even without the hand test, it will detect a malfunction in the slip clutch and issue the error message E03.

How it works:
If the error message E03 is displayed on your petWALK pet door, this indicates that the slip clutch is no longer optimally adjusted.

Display with error message on E03

Cause of error:
E3 is displayed when the door cannot close, but the slip clutch is so loose due to age-related wear that it can no longer stop the opening motor. If this is the case, an error message is regularly displayed and the door is blocked.

The slip clutch is an additional safety feature during operation to prevent jamming even if the electronics are defective. Over time, this can become loose due to normal wear. Caution! This represents a safety risk, as the door can no longer stop if something gets jammed. However, the slip clutch grinding accelerates the wear process, which can lead to the clutch starting to grind during normal operation and eventually no longer closing. In this case, we recommend having the petWALK pet door serviced. You can find information about this on our homepage. In the "Frequently Asked Questions" chapter, you will also find further information on adjusting the slip clutch and under which conditions you can do this.

Elimination of the error:
If the door is still open, you must remove the obstacle. If the door is already closed again, you should check what could have prevented the pet door from closing in order to avoid this situation in the future. Then confirm the error message with the OK button on your remote control. This will make the error message disappear from the display.

For instructions on how to tighten the slip clutch, use the following video or print out the instructions.

5. Door rattles? This is what’s behind it!
If the petWALK door makes a rattling noise and displays the error message E01 when opening or closing, this is due to a mechanical problem caused by extreme temperature changes. The temperature can cause the metal to move and lead to excessive pressure on the door leaf, which means that the bolts can no longer close smoothly.

The error messages can be corrected by simply tightening the locking bolts. Read how to do this here:

Symptom:
When locking and unlocking the locking bolts, you can hear a rattling noise. The door does not open and displays the error message “E01”.

Cause of error:
The contact pressure of the locking bolts may be too high.

Elimination of the error:
petWALK pet doors have adjustable locking bolts that allow you to adjust the contact pressure individually. Download the manual or follow the instructions below:

The contact pressure is ideal when the closed and locked door leaf can still be pressed very easily against the seals, ie when there is still a very small amount of play.

If the bolts are set too tightly, it may happen that the four-point locking drive can no longer open or close the door leaf. You will notice this if the drive "rattles" or the door does not open and the message "E01" appears on the display.

You can easily adjust the contact pressure by turning the bolts eccentrically using a Torx key size 15. The door closes more easily when the flat side of the pane faces inwards and more tightly when it faces outwards.
