Which door size should I choose for my dog or cat?

For cats, choosing the size is easy. The petWALK door in the "Medium" size fits all cats. From the smallest to the XXL specimens, the medium size fits cats wonderfully. What may be interesting to test in advance with cats is the installation height. To do this, however, you do not even need to order the petWALK cat door in the first step; you can cut a 20 x 30 cm hole in a piece of cardboard that you can clamp in a door frame between two rooms. Roughly calculate the planned installation height (e.g. from the floor to the lower edge of the planned glass cutout in the balcony door) and add 10 cm. Then attach the cardboard cutout at the calculated height. If your animals find it difficult to go through the cutout at the calculated height, a different (lower) installation location must be chosen in order to be able to use all the functions of the petWALK door as best as possible (especially motion detection and RFID detection).

For dogs, choosing the right size is important. There is a large size with a passage opening of 30 x 50 cm and a medium size of 20 x 30 cm. If you are unsure about the size, make a cardboard cut-out as described above. In general, dogs with a shoulder height of up to approx. 50 cm can use the medium door. Whether this actually works in practice depends, of course, on how muscular the shoulders are. If you have a muscular dog, it is advisable to test the petWALK door beforehand. We explain exactly how this works below.

How does the RFID recognition of my cat/dog work?

If RFID recognition is an important purchase criterion for the petWALK pet door, then you should test this function extensively. The petWALK door primarily detects movement, RFID recognition can also be activated if required. Since there are many factors that influence RFID recognition, it is better to test it with your animals beforehand. The RFID collar tags offered in our shop work at a distance of approx. 15-20 cm, depending on the size of the tag.

If you want to use the petWALK animal door with implanted chips, be sure to test it before installing the door. Since the performance of these chips is very low due to their extremely small size and the fact that they are implanted in the animal, the functionality of the petWALK animal door with implanted chips cannot be guaranteed in practice. However, many customers are satisfied with the implanted chips, especially those of cats. If the implanted chips are recognized, you can expect a range of up to 5 cm.

There are a few tips on how to make the best use of the RFID detection range. If you have any questions or are testing the function at home, please call us. You can find an overview of RFID here.

Experience the difference!

The petWALK door is a full-fledged door and works completely differently than a flap. It is difficult to tell just from descriptions and pictures how big the difference between a door and a flap really is. Some things you just have to try out to understand them.

If you have questions like... Will my scared cat accept the door? Can my sick dog get through comfortably? How loudly does the door open/close? How stable is it?... then it's best to order a petWALK to your home and practice the process in the test set-up as often as you and your pet like. If the worst comes to the worst, simply return the door to us within 30 days of delivery.

But let’s be honest, your pets will never want to give up the petWALK door again!
