Which Door Size Should I Choose for My Dog or Cat?

For cats, selecting the right size is straightforward. The petWALK door in "Medium" size accommodates all cats, from the smallest to XXL breeds. However, it may be helpful to test the installation height beforehand. You don't even need to order the petWALK cat door immediately; you can create a 20 x 30 cm opening in a piece of cardboard and place it in the door frame between two rooms. Measure the intended installation height (e.g., from the floor to the bottom edge of the planned glass cutout in the balcony door) and add 10 cm. Attach the cardboard cutout at this height. If your cat has difficulty passing through the cutout, you may need to choose a different, lower installation height to maximize the functionality of the petWALK door (especially for motion detection and RFID recognition).

For dogs, choosing the correct size is essential. We offer a large size with a passage opening of 30 x 50 cm and a medium size of 20 x 30 cm. If you're unsure about the size, create a cardboard cutout as described above. In general, dogs with a shoulder height of up to approximately 50 cm can use the medium door. Whether this works in practice depends on the muscularity of the dog's shoulders. If you have a muscular dog, it's advisable to test the petWALK door beforehand. We explain how to do this below.

How Does the RFID Recognition Work for My Cat or Dog?

If RFID recognition is an important purchasing criterion for the petWALK pet door, you should thoroughly test this feature. The petWALK door primarily detects movement, and RFID recognition can be activated as needed. Since several factors influence RFID recognition, it's best to test it with your pets in advance. The RFID collar tags available in our shop work at a distance of approximately 15-20 cm, depending on the size of the tag. If you want to use the petWALK door with implanted chips, be sure to test it before installation. The performance of these chips may be limited due to their small size and the fact that they are implanted in the animal, so we cannot guarantee the functionality of the petWALK door with implanted chips in practice. However, many customers, particularly cat owners, report satisfaction with implanted chips. If recognized, you can expect a range of up to 5 cm. We also provide tips on how to make the most of the RFID detection range. If you have any questions or are testing the function at home, please feel free to contact us. You can find an overview of RFID features on our website.

Experience the Difference!

The petWALK door is a fully functioning door and operates very differently from a traditional flap. It's difficult to appreciate the difference between a door and a flap from descriptions or pictures alone—some things you just need to experience. If you have questions like... Will my timid cat accept the door? Can my sick dog get through comfortably? How loudly does the door open or close? How stable is it?... then it’s best to order a petWALK door for your home and practice using it in a test setup as often as you and your pet like. If needed, you can easily return the door to us within 30 days of delivery. But let’s be honest, your pets will never want to give up their petWALK door again!

Use the petWALK Packaging as a Test Station

Before installing the petWALK pet door, test it at the location where it will eventually be installed. You can easily convert the packaging into a temporary test station in just a few steps.
